Shirley Wangusi, My COVID-19 Experience

“I must say, when I heard school was closing, I thought the universe had been kind enough to give me a free holiday. I was home even before that email had stayed up for 24 hours. Imagine all that time, all that FREE time, no classes…

Countless weeks in and I want out; someone please get me out of this house because I might lose my mind. See, I’m a law student and I’ve always imagined handling landmark cases; how my work would be quoted in LLB textbooks same way I’ve had Donoghue v Stevenson on my fingertips. Well, let’s just say I’ve been reduced to my 7-year-old brother’s lawyer. My two siblings fight over anything and everything, sometimes I’m the judge, sometimes I’m my brother’s legal advisor because the two-year old is total terror…

Oh, and by the way I’m to graduate this year, but with all this eating I think I’ll have to call my tailor. I’m not saying my dress will need adjustments due to having added too much weight. Honestly, that would be an exaggeration. But my face is a little rounder. My belly too. This life thing is very confusing. I’m here complaining about small issues while people out there are losing their loved ones to the virus. Some have been evicted, some areas are flooding, homicide cases seem to be increasing, things are falling apart. And then there’s me, getting upset because someone took my cake from the fridge last night. Well, I hope things get better, for everyone directly or indirectly affected by Covid-19. It’ll get better, it has to.”
